Answers

Why would I use this software over the Real Time display with the CurrentCost?

This dashboard allows users to view a graph of the real time data rather than a single reading. This makes it much easier to spots trends and potential areas to save money.

What information can I see on the Energy Management Dashboard?

The 6 second raw data from the Current Cost meter is automatically aggregated (summed) into seperate half hour readings and daily readings. We then use this information to work out:
  • Daily cost
  • Daily savings - when we have set a target energy use
  • Carbon equivalent
  • Benchmarks of electricity use per square meter
  • Seasonal Average use
  • Baseline consumption....and much more

What is Silverlight?

This is a Microsoft product and is their version of the popular Flash based programme used for web graphics. It is a free download. If you are using Vists or Windows 7 or Internet Explorer 8 then this is installed as standard.

What do I need to install to look at the Dashboard?

You need to install Microsoft Silverlight on your PC. Once installed then click the dashboard link to open the Dashboard  which will load into a conventional web browser. Once open then click on the View Demo button. We have tested the browser in Internet Explorer 6,7, and 8 and Firefox and Opera.

How do I configure the Dashboard?

Once the Dashboard is open on your PC then just drag one of the small graph icons from the bottom of the page onto the main dashbaord area and the graph will automatically pull data from the servers. You can have up to 4 graphs displayed on the one dashboard. There are 8 graphs currently set up on the dashboard (more to follow).

How do I upload data to the Dashboard?

Data has to be uploaded to our FTP site. Details will be provided once an account is set up. We have software available to download data from a Current Cost real time electricity display unit and please see more information on our software page on how to access this data.

What are Targets?

Targets are an estimate of the amount of electricity that you expect to use. Once a target for the electricity use is set then we can calculate the difference between the actual and target electricity use.

How are the Targets set?

We are planning to automatically set targets for elecltrcity use by basing the target on a combination of historic data (ie. based on what you have used in the past - though this is not ideal) and outside temperature and sunset data (used to work out when lights are normally turned on). We are alos planning to undertake some much more complex automated target setting in the near future based on your use of specific household appliances.

You can set up your own targets for the daily electricity use for channels 1 to 3 using the Customise Setup page.

#Can I set up a different costs and does it support multi rate costs (High and Low tariff periods)?

Yes you can enter your own cost using the Customise Setup web page. This allows you to enter your own average unit cost.

We will be setting up the ability to apply your own multi rate tariff in the near future. This will let you enter a cost for your Low rate and a cost for your high rate electricity. You will also be able to set the times when these different tariffs apply.

#Does the system cope with the new Current Cost Individual Appliance Monitors (IAM's)?

At the moment it does not but this is a 'relatively' easy change to make and we plan to do this once the IAM's are released in the UK.

#Can I use this to monitor Solar power generation?

Yes you can use the Service to monitor Solar power generation - but you will need to contact us to enable this. We are able to set up any calculation in the system and we can change the calculations to show your total electricity use, including solar power, or the amount imported from the grid (Import - Solar) or any combination. As long as we can get the data we can give you the information you need.

#What is different between Meniscus and Google PowerMeter?

The main difference is that with Meniscus you can customise virtually every element of the way that the information is both calculated and presented. At the moment, some of this access is not made available to customers with free access to Meniscus but we plan to let users customise more and more of their set up.

With Meniscus you can create:
  • Completely new calculations
  • Add new meters or individual appliance monitors
  • Add other non electricity based source of energy; gas, oil, lpg etc
  • Use Meniscus for monitoring any other utility or parameter
  • Create specific targets

#Can I use the dashboard with another currency?

At the moment the dashboard only displays the costs in £ but we are looking to change this in the near future so that it picks up the default currency from your PC.

In the meantime, of you want to calculate the costs in say AUS$ then you can set up your own cost by entering details in the Customise Setup page. Whilst the dashboard will display the costs in £ the actual numbers will be in AUS$
